Z420 max is 256GB of RAM

On a v1 e5-2630L, I have been able to successfully memtest and use 8x 32GB LRDIMMs for a total of 256GB of ram. You do need a ram cooler on the memory bank that is between the drives and the processor as it will get very hot (was getting hot enough to cause errors before I put a fan on that bank). There is a factory shroud, but this directs that hot air into the power supply, so I opted for a ram cooler.
Someone tried the same setup on a v2 processor and it didn't work. Turns out LRDIMM support was dropped from the v1 to v2 e5 processors.
I haven't tried this with an e5-16xx series processor.
This amount of ram can make for a very nice and silent VM machine or a solid gaming machine with a faster processor. If the games are written right, they should be able to fully load into ram, and if not, there should be ample ram to cache any storage access.
Anyways, posting this here since it was lost in the old site. I have this posted a few other places including HP's support community with the specific samsung part numbers I used.
